I am responding to an article I read in the Daily Record’s “Morris People” weekly newspaper of Sunday, June 22, 2003, entitled “Day laborers a fixture on Morristown corner. Some residents intimidated; workers say they go unpaid.”

The article focuses on abuses to day workers.  It speaks strongly of their rights and various coalitions forming to defend and protect them.  It also mentions that an effort is being made to have a permanent shelter built where they can wait to be picked up by potential employers.

My objection is that the article attempts to minimize the strong possibility that many if not all of these men entered this country illegally.  They have violated our laws and our borders, and we are catering to them.  Have lost our senses?  This is wrong.

The article states that the Mayor of Morristown has positioned policeman on the corner to help the public feel less intimidated by the presence of the “day laborers” and to lessen the negative impact they are having on local businesses.  What the Morristown police should be doing is checking their Green Cards and arresting any and every one of them who doesn’t provide documentation of legal entry into the Untied States!

The “day laborers” claim they “do the work that no one else wants to do.”  Is that true or is it just that they are willing to do it for less?

I feel these “day laborers”, the people who hire them, and the people who defend them are undermining America and the American economy in a number of ways:

 (1)   They are enabling people to give work to illegal immigrants, thus enabling illegal immigrants to survive in this country and encouraging more people to enter illegally;

(2)   They are enabling Americans to take work that would normally go to legitimate contractors (who pay income taxes and who employ or should be employing workers who pay income taxes) and give it to undocumented workers who don’t.

(3)   These undocumented workers who don’t pay taxes are having children in this country and sending them to our “free” public schools, which means they are ripping off the rest of us who do work and pay taxes.

When Peter Saharko, spokesman for the State Department of Labor, says:  “Whether the workers are legal or illegal; that’s an issue for the Department of Homeland Security,” he is passing the buck!  Instead of defending the rights of illegal-immigrant day laborers he should be defending our rights to secure borders by reporting them to the Department of Homeland Security.  To imply that these undocumented and possibly illegal-immigrant day laborers are “entitled to unemployment and disability insurance” when they don’t pay unemployment, disability or social security taxes is preposterous – and a slap in the face to every one in America who pays those taxes.

If you agree with me or oppose support for these “day laborers” for reasons of your own, please write to your Mayor, your Governor and your Congressmen and let them know your views.

I am an american, born in Dover, nj.  All of my friends...by choice are latinos.  I would not live with americans again if you paid me.  Latinos are cleaner, not lazy, are better educated, and very hard workers.  I know this from experience, because I have lived with latinos for almost 15 years.  No, they don't stand on the corners of morristown, and dover every morning, to make less money.. they work 6 days a week and average between $600.00 and $800.00 a week.  and not paying taxes is not there fault.  those contractors, and or landscapers, would hire them, or americans, and pay anyone off the books, or under the table.  I have many latinos friends (over 500). Many work in our local hospitals, restaurants, companys..are illegal, and pay taxes.  they get a paycheck everyweek from there employer, and yes taxes are taken out.  they just can't get a refund at the end of the year.  The reason  INS doesn't deport them, is because they legally cannot.  I have a cousin who works in Virginia, in the home office of INS, and just being here illegal is not enough reason to be deported.  You have to commit a major federal crime, like robbing a bank, or murder. If you are caught here without correct papers, you can be put in deportation jail, but then you are fined $5,000.00 and once you pay the fine, you are given an immigration lawyer, and that $5,000.00 goes towards helping you get legalized in this country.  I am so sick of reading and hearing about only the latino illegals, when there are 8 million illegal people in this country, and from every country in the world. So instead of going against them, lets try and help them, I believe they should all be given the opportunity to get there legal papers in this country, as long as they are not criminals, and are not a threat to society, which 98% of them are not! They are just good hard working people like you and me, who are just trying to put food on the table so there children can eat.  Just because you and I are american, don't mean we are better than they are, just because we were born where we are.  United States is one of the worst countries in education.  the government controls everything.  by your ss# they know where you are, and working at all times..  if you think america is free...guess again. in central and south america, you buy or build a house. its paid for. its yours.  no one can ever take it away from you..ever.. here..you do the same..you work your butt off to pay for your house.lets say $500,000.00 its now paid free and clear...its yours? didn't pay your taxes...your house is taken away from you...and we are suposedly the smarter ones..think again. Those dishwashers, laborers, landscapers...don't speak English maybe...or have the correct papers...but in there countries they are Doctors, Lawyers, Dentists...ect.. so just remember the next time you go out to eat...maybe your having a heart attack or choking , and possibly dying, that latino dishwasher..maybe a doctor...and could save your life...lets stop thinking about what country everyone is from, and instead remind everyone that we are all from the same earth..we do the same things everyday, we drink the same water everyday, and live off of the same land, everday....just think...and remember...

I am also an American citizen.  I live in Morristown, NJ.  My friends are of all race, religion and color by choice!  Your a very lucky person to have 500 Latino friends! Your statement about Latinos being better educated, cleaner, not lazy and hard working could be true of any culture or religion!  You will find in ANY culture that there are also less educated, dirty, and lazy people who don't work!   If you do choice to come to America, then work to make America and the town you live in a better place for ALL to live!

The contractors and/or landscapers would hire anyone off the books and that in itself is wrong!  So what do WE do!  We HAVE to pay our taxes, or as you mentioned will get our house taken away!
Why would you say and I quote you:

"No, they don't stand on the corners of morristown, and dover every morning, to make less money.. they work 6 days a week and average between $600.00 and $800.00 a week.  and not paying taxes is not there fault.  those contractors, and or landscapers, would hire them, or americans, and pay anyone off the books, or under the table."

Do you  feel that the Latinos have the right to do that when it's against the law!?  Neither the Americans or any culture have the right to do that!  It's not fair to all the hard working people of the country who pay taxes!  That has always been a problem here in the US and we haven't been able to fix it, but you feel it's ok to come to America and continue to do it!  No sir, that's not fair and not a very smart comment!   Your attempt to defend the day workers is honorable!   Two wrongs don't make a right though!  What do they do with their $600 or $800 dollars a week?  Their not paying any taxes, so they don't own a home? Right?  Are they putting their money back in the country that opened it's arms to them?  I wonder?  You need to think before making a statement like that!  That could go against all your trying to say!

My husband and I work just as hard as your Latino friends or any American citizen and do not appreciate the Mayor of Morristown planning on building a structure for the day laborers.  First of all,  ALL the children of Morristown need a place to congregate and get to know each other!   Maybe there won't be any "racial fights" as the press assumed happened recently!  Let's think about that first!   And how can we expect our children to understand and except diversity when the adults are acting like fools!   What makes a community work is when everyone, every race or religion, color  or culture work together to make their country and town something to be proud of!  No one wants to see our towns become media attractions because of it's diverse population and the difficulties they are having.   We rather have the news tell of our community that works!

Being able to know people from other countries and learn their cultures is something that we should take pride in and learn from!  So when coming to America, learn and respect our culture and way of life, too!  Not everyone believes that Americans are better then others.  If people come to America with the intent to work hard and make money to feed their families here and become a citizen of the United States of American, then more power to them!  Good Luck!  I wish you well!

I think the Latino dishwasher who "maybe a doctor" needs to get into a school and start practicing here in the states, his talants are lost in soapy water!

We do drink the same water, and live on the same land, then lets try and work TOGETHER as best we can!  Think about that, remember that!

Hmm, let's see... The word ILLEGAL gets mentioned so often. As a direct victim of 9/11, yes lack of documentation bothers me. As a NORTH American born citizen of immigrant grandparents (who came to this country legally), it doesn't. Who can claim this country as their own anyway. We're are mostly all descended from immigrants who stole this country from the indigenous tribes anyway. These people are not the problem. They are just looking for an opportunity to put food on their families' tables. It just makes me wonder how dangerous it is for someone to have so much free time to write such a passionate message about discrimination and persecution. Idle minds...

If you want to be an American in this country, U.S. is the place to be. If you would like to be something else, by all means be something else, somewhere else, This country gives you the right. I know there are other countries that don't give you that right. By no means are you keeped here and not aloud to leave. But, most of all whatever and wherever you plan on being, do the right thing. Become a citizen of that country, and if you need to pay taxes, pay them. There is no dought in my mine, if you don't like the way things are going in this country, you can vote too try and change it, can you do that elsewhere? I feel that citizans of this country who voted politicians in, should let them know they can be voted out also.

I have been living next to Morristown for 27 years . And have a very good spanish friend from dover. And we are now the god fother of there son. I have been keeping up on the reading of what has been going on in Morristown with the day workers. As we all now there are lazy people and people who want to work of all walks of life. Yes the day workers are working but they are not taking jobs away from nobody. Just go to the unemployment agencies and you will now what I am talking about. And they are not bothering nobody when they stand out on the corner looking for work. also these worker need protection from the people who do not pay them at the end of the day. I think the real reason for all of this crap that is going on in Morristown is that the town does not want the image that it feels it will get from them being there. Just remember if they wenent there who would keep your grass cut

Ok ladies and gentlemen, lets stop acting like this is not an issue in Morristown.  Thats first and foremost.  Why these mexicans are standing on the street corner waiting for work is beyond me.  I have worked for contractors before and they usually take in the same people year round.  The rest of these bums are sitting and most likely up to no good. I take the train to New York every morning and I find it hard to believe that someone can get a job while standing on the side of a building.  I am happy to hear that everyone has latino friends.  Great for you.  I have latino friends and white friends and all types of friends.  These are not the same people who border jumped illegally.  Their parents came to this country and got visas and worked towards their citizenship.   I am not predjudice, but I do believe we as Americans need to have rules and regulations on who exactly lives in our towns.   How do we know these people are not criminals in their respective countries?  We don't.  In American, if you get arrested there is a file on you.  We don't have files on some of these people.  So I believe you can defend the fact that latinos are hard workers and this and that, but we need to document what is happening in our backyards.  Yes our relatives were immigrants, but that was  a different time.  That was when American was shaping and there was no threat of animals crashing airplanes into buildings.  We need to have laws and these laws need to be maintained.
